hello!
The Pondering Frog Cafe, Ice Creamery and RV StopOver has been operating for a decade. Our mission is to supply high quality service, information and products to the travelling public on the East Coast of Tasmania.
THE PONDERING FROG
We are Ray, Nina and Eric: New owners of Pondering Frog and we can’t wait to meet you! Still offering the same great service and meals which Lester and Collette established, we have also added a new Asian menu to Pondering Frog.
Eric is a Malaysian chef with over 20 years’ experience. Having lived in Australia for 15 years, he has served as an executive chef in Singapore and been the head chef at some of the best Chinese restaurants in Melbourne.
We love Tasmania, especially the beautiful East Coast, but the options for Chinese cuisine are quite limited. We hope to offer local residents and visitors a different choice. We’re here just simply doing our best and sharing our passion for food!

HISTORY OF THE PONDERING FROG
On a visit to Tasmania in December 2013, Lester and Collette stumbled across a very special property. It was in an excellent location and they knew that with the right management it could become a great stopover for people travelling the Tasman Highway on the East Coast of Tasmania.
Since opening the gate in July 2014, the Pondering Frog has progressed from a tin shed in a paddock selling ice cream and smoothies, to a vibrant place to stop and relax. The Pondering Frog has established itself as a must stop destination for travellers who are seeking help with their itineraries, looking for great food and fabulous ice cream.
Open 365 days a year, The Pondering Frog has something for everyone.
Prior to coming to Tasmania, Lester owned and operated a large tourist facility in Young NSW. JD’s Jam Factory was well known throughout Australia. Lester built the business up from a shed on the side of the road to a 140 seat restaurant, retail outlet and manufacturing facility supplying products to Coles and Woolworths nationwide under his own label. He also had a large cherry orchard and supplied SPC with canned black sweet cherries for the catering industry.
Collette is the frog lady. She has been collecting frogs for many years. Her pride and joy is The Pondering Frog. This frog was the inspiration for the name of the property.
One day a customer came and asked ”What is that frog thinking about?” Collette replied “He is pondering what we will call the place”. Hence the name was born!
